Web Reconnaissance for 04/02/2009

A short recon of what’s out there that might draw your attention, updated throughout the day...so check back often.

Robert Stacy McCain: There aren't too many of me, although there might be too many of you - The world has too many "experts": Nina Fedoroff told the BBC One Planet programme that humans had exceeded the Earth's "limits of sustainability." “Dr Fedoroff has been the science and technology advisor to the US secretary of state since 2007, initially working with Condoleezza Rice. . . . Pressed on whether she thought the world population was simply too high, Dr Fedoroff replied: ‘There are probably already too many people on the planet.’” So why don't you go jump in a lake, Dr. Fedoroff? Obviously, a "science and technology advisor" consumes far more resources annually than me, my wife and six kids combined. So please die, Dr. Fedoroff. Do it for the children! (READ MORE)

Veronica DiPippo: Let Them Eat Che - Much has been written about Hollywood’s obsession with Communist poster child and fashion icon Ernesto “Che” Guevara. Despite the protestations of those who actually knew and were tortured or persecuted by Che, the stories of hundreds of thousands of Cuban exiles and a vast body of easily accessible knowledge on the failed state he helped create, the bad boy “Butcher of la Cabaña” still holds an unholy fascination with the historically-challenged. Though Che was opposed to free elections, freedom of religion, free speech, free press, freedom of assembly, and even freewheeling rock and roll, he has morphed into the ultimate freedom fighter célèbre. Is the phenomenon of the world’s wealthiest and most privileged paying homage to a destroyer of wealth and privilege unique? In a word: no. In school, we’re told we learn history in order to prevent ourselves from repeating the mistakes of the past. If only that were true. (READ MORE)

AJStrata: “Man Caused Disaster” Strikes Children In Israel - It seems we must equate “terrorism” (now aka “man caused disaster” - like there are no women terrorists or terrorism supporters) with the myth that CO2 is causing a warming of our global climate (which has actually been cooling for a decade). That is the only reason I see for the similarity between “man-made global warming” and “man caused disasters”. Clearly we need to invest in our war against the axis of evil (energy companies) that wield that Weapon of Mass Destruction CO2 (which has the hideous side effect of making plants grow more, producing more oxygen and food and cleansing our environment of toxic elements). This is fixing the message to set the stage for a new PR campaign. Apparently, for the deluded priests of the Church of Al Gore/IPCC that now inhabit Team Obama the use of fossil fuels is akin to taking an axe to a child: (READ MORE)

Kim Priestap: Why General Motors and Chrysler Need to Declare Bankruptcy Immediately - I have written several times now why it's in GM's best interest that they declare bankruptcy. I have provided general reasons why. Steve Priestap, my husband, offers specifics why filing Chapter 11 is best for not only GM and Chrysler, but for any American corporation the Obama administration may target in the future. The problem with selling your soul to the devil is that eventually the devil shows up and wants his due. The current government takeover of General Motors, to the extent of the hiring and firing of corporate officers and the gratuitous guaranteeing of auto warranties, is an almost perfect illustration of why Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code exists. There is little doubt that GM is in need of the relief that is offered by Chapter 11. It's the only way they can scare off the devil, which in this case is represented by the Obama Administration. William Teach: Obama Tax Increases: We Hate To Tell You We Told You So, Obama Voters… - But, you know, we told you so, and even the Associated Press is not able to keep their hopeNchange enthusiasm with this story: “One of President Barack Obama’s campaign pledges on taxes went up in puffs of smoke Wednesday. The largest increase in tobacco taxes took effect despite Obama’s promise not to raise taxes of any kind on families earning under $250,000 or individuals under $200,000. This is one tax that disproportionately affects the poor, who are more likely to smoke than the rich. To be sure, Obama’s tax promises in last year’s campaign were most often made in the context of income taxes. Not always.” With all the massive spending Obama and The Donkeys have done and are planning to do - $787 billion Porkulus, $410 Omnibus, Obama’s $3.6 trillion 2010 proposed budget (I am hearing reports that the Dems wanted to add more, making it $4.1 trillion), creating nationalized/socialized health care, human induced global warming plans, etc and so on - you can expect this to be the first of many, many, many tax increases. JonJayRay: America’s immigration laws have been radically changed overnight! - Catch and let go seems to be the new policy for illegals. Napolitano Frees 27 Illegal Immigrants, Sends Them Back to Work: The Department of Homeland Security freed 27 illegal immigrants arrested during a workplace raid in February and offered them legal work permits, signaling a major departure from the immigration enforcement policy of the Bush administration. The Feb. 24 raid of an auto parts plant in Bellingham, Wash., netted 28 illegal immigrants. While one was deported, the remaining workers were released from custody and given employment authorization documents, or EADs, in exchange for cooperating with an ongoing investigation of their employer, Yamato Engine Specialists. The EAD is a temporary work permit most commonly given to people applying for green cards or citizenship. It usually lasts for one year, but Immigration and Customs Enforcement sources tell FOX News that these work permits will expire when the case against Yamato is closed. (READ MORE)

Sister Toldjah: Dissecting NARAL’s response to Tim Kaine - Yesterday in the Hot Headlines I linked up to the story about Virginia Governor (and DNC Chair) Tim Kaine’s signing into law a bill that would allow Virginia residents the option to have a state license plate that has the words “Choose Life” on it: “Tim Kaine, the Virginia governor and President Barack Obama’s hand-picked choice as the head of the Democratic National Committee, infuriated abortion-rights groups Monday by signing legislation that gives abortion foes a long-sought victory. Kaine brushed off intense lobbying by abortion rights supporters in Richmond to sign a bill that allows Virginia motorists to advertise their anti-abortion views by sporting ‘Choose Life’ specialty license plates. The revenue from the specialty plates would go to crisis-pregnancy centers, which many abortion-rights backers believe proslyetize against abortion and encourage women to keep unwanted children.” Encouraging women to keep their children? Horrifying, I know. How did far left feminist groups react? NARAL/Pro-Choice America provides the perfect - and predictable - example: (READ MORE)

John Hinderaker: From the Mouths of Babes - We wrote here about Miss Universe, Dayana Mendoza, who was invited to tour Guantanamo Bay by the USO. She was impressed by the facility and the U.S. soldiers she met there, and wrote a cheerful, positive account of her visit on her blog at the Miss Universe site, as she has done with visits to other locales. Evidently, however, saying anything positive about Guantanamo Bay and the soldiers who run it is beyond the pale. Miss Mendoza's blog entry has been deleted and replaced with a statement by Paula Shugart, President of the Miss Universe organization, which says in part: “Dayana Mendoza's comments on her blog were in reference to the hospitality she received while meeting the members of the U.S. military and their families who are stationed in Guantánamo.” They were indeed. Miss Mendoza's comments were entirely non-political and merely reflected her own experiences and first-hand observations. So why did they have to be deleted? Apparently Guantanamo Bay has become a topic on which, in polite society, rational conversation is prohibited. (READ MORE)

Political Vindication: Guest Post: Dereliction Of Duty - Our good friend over at Churchill’s Parrot is sending out the warning that our government has declared war - on those that defend innocent life: One thing that can be said for President Obama, he certainly is making it difficult for the American Catholic Left to maintain its charade of being actually Catholic. From the battle of Notre Dame, to the Bishop’s being exposed for directing millions in congregational contributions to ACORN, to the dirty little realization that 54% of Catholics voted for a pro-infanticide presidential candidate because social justice peddlers assured them he was “the real pro-life candidate”, the fact that the Church in America is lousy with Marxists using Christianity as a tool to con the unwitting and unsuspecting into buying their Leftist anti-Christianity is becoming plain for all to see. The latest case in point. In early March the Obama Administration announced its intentions to rescind the Department of Health and Human Services Provider Conscience Rule. (READ MORE)

yankeemom: Words That Do Not Die - I have been quiet lately, listening, thinking, more listening, reading and watching ~ always watching. I see my country going down. I see men and women who took an oath to defend the Constitution of the country they say they serve in offices elected by the people, walk a crooked road paved with honest citizens hard earned money. I hear others cry out that they need more, more and more from the government, which means more from those of us who pay taxes. I listen to people who have not a clue what this country stands for or the meaning of the words: freedom, liberty, inalienable rights, individualism or patriotism. I read words of disdain for this country that has given so much to so many. I read the speeches of those who have the highest offices apologize for and blame and bash this country while on foreign soil. I watch. (READ MORE)

Hamilton, Madison, and Jay: Has anyone in the Obama administration even read the Constitution? - No, don't answer that. It's a rhetorical question. Given the unconstitutional efforts already undertaken either directly by Barry and his administration (sacking Rick Wagoner, replacing GM board members) or congressional Democrats (the AIG ex post facto law) of course they don't care about the Constitution. This time around AG Eric holder has decided he doesn't like one opinion he received so he's ignoring it, because, you know, the Constitution just doesn't matter: Justice Department lawyers concluded in an unpublished opinion earlier this year that the historic D.C. voting rights bill pending in Congress is unconstitutional, according to sources briefed on the issue. But Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., who supports the measure, ordered up a second opinion from other lawyers in his department and determined that the legislation would pass muster. (READ MORE)

Ed Morrissey: (Video) Smoking gun on NYT-spiked-ACORN story? - Two days ago, I wrote about allegations that the New York Times spiked a story that linked ACORN corruption to Barack Obama’s campaign. Last night, Bill O’Reilly played what appears to be smoking-gun evidence — an answering machine message from NYT reporter Stephanie Strom explaining how the editors shut down the story: The message comes from Strom to a source named “Anita”, which I’ve transcribed. There may be one small problem with this, though. Listen closely for it: “STROM: Hi, Anita, it’s Stephanie. I have just been asked by my bosses to stand down. … They want me to hold off on coming to Washington. Ah, sorry, I take my orders from higher up, ah, sometimes. Anyway, I’m sorry about this and we’ll still be in touch. Take care, and, ah, let me know if there’s anything I can do to help you. Take care. Goodbye.” (READ MORE)

Don Surber: Is it legal? - Karl Rove: “Senior presidential adviser Valerie Jarrett and her chief of staff, Michael Strautmanis, are in regular contact with MoveOn.Org, Americans United for Change and other liberal interest groups.” Foolish me. I thought outside, independent political campaigns were not allow to coordinate with politicians like that. If true, would this not make the expenditures by Move On and the like last year on Barack Obama’s behalf campaign contributions that should be reported and limited to $4,600? And are corporations like Move On allowed to make campaign contributions. Rove’s column in the Wall Street Journal today concentrated on the Chicago-style politics being played out by the White House. The president is making a list, checking it twice and he’s going to mark who’s naughty and nice. If a Democratic congressman wants to face opposition in the primary next year, all he has to do is piss President Obama off. Ask Joe Lieberman how that feels. (READ MORE)

Douglas Farah: Some Healthy Developments in Mexico's "Narco-Insurgency" - As today's Washington Post makes clear, Mexico and the United States now recognize what is happening in Mexico as a narco-insurgency, with all that implies. Not simply drug trafficking. Not pockets of isolated violence. But a direct insurgent challenge to the state. That recognition, which has been a long time coming, accepts the seriousness of the challenge and the resources that will be necessary to combat the forces arrayed against the state. This recognition is coupled with another important and heartening public statement by Secretary Clinton that the demand for drugs in the United States and elsewhere, and the flow of weapons, are primary factors in giving the Mexican (and Colombian and Central American etc.) cartels the resource they need to wage this insurgency. Karl Rove: The President Is 'Keeping Score' - "Don't think we're not keeping score, brother." That's what President Barack Obama said to Rep. Peter DeFazio in a closed-door meeting of the House Democratic Caucus last week, according to the Associated Press. A few weeks ago, Mr. DeFazio voted against the administration's stimulus bill. The comment from Mr. Obama was a presidential rebuke and part of a new, hard-nosed push by the White House to pressure Congress to adopt the president's budget. He has mobilized outside groups and enlisted forces still in place from the Obama campaign. Senior presidential adviser Valerie Jarrett and her chief of staff, Michael Strautmanis, are in regular contact with MoveOn.Org, Americans United for Change and other liberal interest groups. Deputy Chief of Staff Jim Messina has collaborated with Americans United for Change on strategy and even ad copy. Ms. Jarrett invited leaders of the liberal interest groups to a White House social event with the president and first lady to kick off the lobbying campaign. (READ MORE)

Confederate Yankee: Simple Logic in a Time of Madness - Republicans have now offered an alternative budget that is based upon a very simple truth that seems to elude both the President and Congress, that a nation cannot spend its way out of debt. It proposes stopping all non-stimulative "stimulus" spending, freezing most discretionary spending for five years, and implementing a simple, common-sense tax structure so simple that even an Obama Administration appointee can figure it out. Will Congress or the President embrace the entirely rational approach of lessening the growth of government spending in troubled times? Of course not. It took years of dedicated, concentrated self-deception for Democrats to finally reach the point where they could create a "reality-based community" so logically damaged that they could reassure each other that government-by-Ponzi-scheme was a viable economic model.
