I was in an artillery unit in the 60. I was in motor maintenance, so I didn't have anything to do with the guns. One time I was shocked to see how the projectiles were unloaded off of a deuce and a half. They just rolled them off the back end and let them hit the ground. When you figure the shock they take without exploding when they are fired, the little thud isn't much.
